About
Welcome to He is Sufficient, a blog about finding the joy of worship through discussions of faith, theology and the Bible. Thanks for stopping by!
About me
My name is ElShaddai Edwards and I live in the Minneapolis (Minnesota, USA) metro area with my wife and our two sons. I was born and grew up in Homer, Alaska, then left to attend Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. After two years of fruitless studies in math and physics, I shifted gears and graduated with a degree in Music. Since then, I’ve worked at software development and IT firms in product management, business analysis, and various marketing positions. I currently work as an Information Architect for RMG Connect, an interactive design agency with offices in downtown Minneapolis.
My personal interests include playing trombone, the history of American brass instrument manufacturing, web site design, golf, football (American), paintings by Winslow Homer and whatever else each day brings. I am an INTP on the Myers-Briggs personality index and thrive in the very early hours of the morning with my Bible, the Internet and several cups of coffee, preferably Starbucks.
About the blog
The phrase “a wilderness of words” is taken from the Revised English Bible’s translation of the Greek adjective mataiologia (1 Timothy 1:6, cf. Titus 1:10). Strong’s defines mataiologia as “vain talking, empty talk”. The root adjective mataios means “devoid of force, truth, success, result” and “useless, of no purpose”, while legos suggests verbal discussion or talking. William Barclay notes that mataios “applied to heathen worship. The main idea was of a worship which produced no goodness in life.” The NASB suggestively captures this with the translation “unfruitful discussion”.
Putting works to faith, fitting action to theology, turning empty talk into a fruiting branch … these are the goals of this blog and my life as a Christian. Sadly it seems that, like Paul, “when I want to do right, only wrong is within my reach. In my inmost self I delight in the law of God, but I perceive in my outward actions a different law, fighting against the law that my mind approves, and making me a prisoner under the law of sin which controls my conduct. Wretched creature that I am, who is there to rescue me from this state of death?”
None but God. For He alone is sufficient for all our needs.
